You argue that restoring dealerships would endanger the reorganized General Motors and Chrysler companies. In fact, G.M. and Chrysler need more dealers to succeed, not fewer. Dealers are sources of revenue for manufacturers, and they don’t cost the manufacturers a dime.

The car companies want us to believe cutting dealers will position them to emerge stronger and better able to compete, that there are too many dealers, they cost too much and deliver too little. This logic is flawed.

I wish we didn’t have to take up your valuable time. Our Committee has made clear for weeks that we are prepared to sit down with the White House Auto Task Force, the CEOs of GM and Chrysler, and others to work toward the reinstatement of the nearly 3,400 dealers terminated or slated for termination. But, there is silence on the other end of the line.

What’s happened to auto dealers in every corner of the country is disgraceful and un-American. Chrysler gave 789 of its dealers less than a month to pack up, and GM wants another 2,000 dealerships to vanish, with closings translating to 200,000 job losses.
