If a local Congressman has his way, those car dealerships targeted for closure by General Motors and Chrysler would get their franchises back.
In this area, a pair of Chrysler dealerships, Frederick in Boardman and Preston in Warren, were among almost 800 stores to close around the country as part of the automaker’s bankruptcy. In Columbiana County, a Chevy dealer is set to be closed late next year as part of GM’s restructuring.
Now, Congressman Steve LaTourette, whose district includes northern Trumbull County, is pushing a measure to force the automakers into restoring franchise agreements since they’re partially owned by the government. While LaTourette sponsored the bill, it’s getting support from Valley Congressman Tim Ryan, as well.
The House Appropriations Committee, which includes both lawmakers, passed the measure. It now goes before the Rules Committee for further action.
